Polar Filament ESD PLA – Experimental Anti-Static PLA
Polar Filament ESD PLA is a specially formulated anti-static PLA designed for applications where electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection is critical. Unlike standard PLA, which is an electrical insulator, this material has a surface resistance between 1×10⁷ and 1×10⁹ ohms per inch, making it slightly conductive and capable of dissipating static buildup.
⚠️ This is an experimental R&D batch while we work toward certification. We are continuing to refine the formulation, and the final certified version will be released as a separate product.
Testing ESD Properties
Most standard multimeters cannot measure resistance in this range, as they are not designed for high-resistance materials. To verify the anti-static properties, a proper megohmmeter (insulation tester) should be used. Alternatively, a practical test involves using the printed part in an environment where static buildup typically occurs and observing reduced static-related issues, such as dust accumulation or electrical discharge.
Applications
- Electronics enclosures – Prevents static buildup and protects sensitive components.
- Jigs and fixtures – Useful in electronics manufacturing where ESD safety is required.
- Tooling for semiconductor and circuit board assembly – Minimizes the risk of electrostatic discharge damage.
Printing Recommendations
- Hotend Temperature: 220–230°C
- Bed Temperature: 60°C
- Print Speed: 60–180 mm/s
- For Best Conductivity: Print hotter and slower to maximize conductivity and surface consistency.
